How do I care for my Bike Part Jewlery?
Most of the bicycle parts on my jewelry are metal. Metal can rust, and will rust if given the opporunity. In order to keep your jewelry looking awesome, I've sprayed the bicycle parts (chain plates and chain rollers only) with a few layers of Krylon. In no way will these few layers of Krylon protect your jewelry from rusting for life, so it will be a good idea to respray your jewelry should you see it start to rust. Clean it first, then do a few light layers of clear Krylon.
The other way to keep it from rusting is to put chain lube or cooking spray on the metal parts...but that can get messy.
I'll start you off, but it's up to you to keep your jewelry clean and dry and thus rust free.
What bike parts do you use?
Please visit the Bike Parts I Use page to see photos of the bike parts used in my jewelry.
What materials do you use in your jewelry?
I strive to use as many recycled materials (bike parts) as I can. There are times when I simply cannot find the piece I need used, so I use new.
Unless specifically stated, the word silver relates only to color, not material. I will specify in the description when I use sterling silver.
I am a bead gatherer. I have a tough time not popping into a bead store on a whim if I see one while I'm out. I work a lot with wood, bone and horn beads, as I feel they lend themselves to the more "earthy" look and feel of some of my jewelry. I also work with Indian and Czech glass beads. Indian glass tends to have a less polished look than Czech glass beads. I've recently started working with natural semi-precious stones, such as Fluorite, Agate, Jasper and Carnelion. They cost a bit more than the glass beads, but have a look hard to duplicate. And lastly, I've branched out to using Swarovski crystals in some of my pieces. They are gorgeous and add just the right amount of pizzazz to the piece.
Please allow for slight differences in color and design on beads. If there is a drastic change in the look of the item due to bead availability, etc, I will contact you and let you know. We can work together to come up with a mutually suitable solution.
What metals do you work in?
I work in a variety of metals: silver plate, copper, brass, bronze, bright aluminum, anodized (colored) aluminum, stainless steel and base metal. I can also work in sterling, gold filled, niobium and titanium. I don't generally work in fine metals as they are quite expensive. But if you would like a piece created in fine metal, please let me know, and I will quote you a price.
Stainless steel is probably the strongest metal I work in. I highly suggest stainless steel if you are rough on your jewelry or you plan on wearing a piece all the time. It's easy to care for and durable.
Bright aluminum and anodized aluminum are amazingly light. Anodized aluminum allows me to bring beautiful colors into my jewelry. You will find I work with a variety of colors of anodized aluminum rings, as well as scales and stamping plates. Aluminum is a great alternative to stainless if you want color and a lighter-weight piece.
Copper, brass and bronze are absolutely delightful metals to work in. They look gorgeous in my jewelry. Copper, as it ages and is worn, will start to patina. You can clean it every so often if you prefer your copper to remain bright.
Silver plate is a good alternative to sterling or fine silver. It's much less expensive than sterling or fine silver and holds up well to wear. I have made many gorgeous pieces with silver plate rings.
Can you make my jewelry a custom length?
Absolutely. Many pieces of jewelry can be sized to your specific requirements. I will be happy to add up to 2 inches in length to necklaces and bracelets free of charge (except for sterling or other fine materials). Each item that can be resized has a box where you can enter your desired length.
Do you do commissioned work?
I love doing commissioned work. If you have a special item you'd like made, I'd love to do it for you! I'll craft something one of a kind for you.
